What this actually involves
A sick child should be seen by someone who knows them, not by whoever is on shift at an urgent care that does not have their chart. We hold same-day slots at every clinic every weekday and run a sick-only Saturday morning clinic at Ingersoll from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
Our triage nurses use pediatric protocols on the phone, so a call about a fever in a four-week-old and a call about a fever in a four-year-old get genuinely different answers. Some of those calls end with us telling you to go to Blank Children's emergency department instead, and that is the right answer when it is the right answer.

What is included
Six things we do every time, not a list of aspirations.
On-site rapid testing
Rapid strep with reflex culture, influenza A and B, RSV, COVID-19, urinalysis with dipstick and microscopy, and point-of-care hemoglobin.
Pediatric strep policy
We test when the Centor-style features fit a child, not for every sore throat. A negative rapid test in a child goes to culture, because rapid tests miss real strep in kids.
Ear and eye complaints
Pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry when the picture is unclear, and fluorescein exam for eye pain. Watchful waiting with a delayed prescription is an option we offer by age and severity.
Dehydration assessment
Weight against the last recorded weight, capillary refill, mucous membranes and a trial of oral rehydration in clinic before anybody talks about IV fluids.
Asthma flares
Albuterol by spacer in the room, pulse oximetry, and a written change to the asthma action plan before you leave.
Wound and injury care
Simple laceration repair with tissue adhesive or sutures, splinting, and same-day referral for anything that needs imaging we do not have.

Sick slots open when the phones do. Portal messages are not the fast route for an acute problem.
- 02Nurse triage
A pediatric nurse works through a protocol with you and decides whether this is a clinic visit, a telehealth visit, or an emergency department.
- 03In clinic
Sick visits room in a separate hallway at Ingersoll and Jordan Creek, away from newborn and well-visit rooms.
- 04Follow-up call
We call the next day on any child under two, any child who needed fluids, and any child we were not sure about.

All FAQsAny rectal temperature of 100.4 F or higher in a baby under three months. At any age, call 911 for trouble breathing, a seizure, a child who cannot be woken, a stiff neck with fever, or a rash of purple spots that does not fade when you press a glass against it.
For a child we already know, we are usually faster and always better informed. Urgent care makes sense when we are closed and the problem cannot wait until morning. For anything severe, go to a pediatric emergency department, not an adult urgent care.
Call for any fever in a baby under three months, for fever over five days at any age, for fever that goes away for a day and returns, or any time your child looks worse rather than warmer.
Almost never. Most childhood infections are viral, and prescribing without an exam is how children end up with resistant bacteria and rashes. We will always offer you a visit instead.
